Exit:
HiperScan GmbH becomes technology subsidiary of Fagron Group
TGFS
27 April 2022
The Dutch-Belgian Fagron group announced today that it acquired a majority stake in HiperScan GmbH, as part of its growth strategy. HiperScan GmbH is a portfolio company of TGFS Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen.
Fagron is market leader in pharmaceutical formulations, supplying clinics, pharmacies, physicians and patients worldwide in over 35 countries with a selection of 2,500 pharmaceutical raw materials. The company operates as a listed multinational group. Its legal domicile is in Waregem, Belgium, and its headquarters are in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. With around 2,800 employees, the company is one of the world’s leading providers of personalized medicine.
HiperScan GmbH was founded in 2006 as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (IPMS) Dresden and currently employs 51 people. Based on the micromirror technology developed at Fraunhofer Institute, it was possible to develop a high-performance and at the same time low-cost near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer. This spectrometer can be used for various application areas. With a focus on identity testing of formulation starting materials, HiperScan has become the market leader in laboratory spectrometers for pharmacies in German-speaking countries.
TGFS has actively supported the company’s development since summer 2010. Since then, the team around Dr. Alexander Wolter and Michael Thoma has succeeded in convincing more than 3,000 pharmacies of the advantages of the NIR spectrometer. This, in turn, has prompted Fagron to expand its product range to include the technology successfully commercialized by HiperScan and to offer it to customers worldwide through its own sales activities. Dr. Wolter, founder of HiperScan, comments: „With the technology from Fraunhofer IPMS and the support of TGFS, we have built an innovative company that pharmacists in Germany love. With Fagron behind us, we get optimal access to international markets. We look forward to being able to make precise analyses fast, easy and safe worldwide with ideas and high-tech from Dresden.“
For TGFS, which has supported more than 80 founders and start-ups in the Free State of Saxony since 2008, this is already the second exit in 2022. Sören Schuster, Managing Director of TGFS: „We are delighted about this strategic exit. A big thank you goes to the founding team of HiperScan, which will continue to be responsible for the success and growth at the Dresden location.“
